Upcoming Run For Barrie will raise money for local food bank

'We have many events elsewhere, but this is the first of its kind for Barrie and we are very excited to get started,' Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association official says of Oct. 9 event

An event in support of Barrie's food bank hits the ground running next month and organizers hope to make a big debut.

The inaugural Run For Barrie event to raise money for Barrie Food Bank happens on Sunday, Oct. 9.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association-Barrie Chapter vice-president Junaid Ahmed Saba says he hopes to see people of all ages and walks of life come out in support.

“This is a family fun event, with three different walks to suit different ages. We want to have everyone come out and make this as big as possible so we, as a community, can give back,” Saba told BarrieToday. “We have many events elsewhere, but this is the first of its kind for Barrie and we are very excited to get started.”

The run will have a one-, three- and five-kilometre option.

While this is the first Run for Barrie, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Youth Association has been organizing charity runs for the last 17 years.

This year, there are 18 charity runs planned across Canada, with the Run for Vaughan event raising $350,000 last year in support of the Cortellucci Vaughan hospital.

Saba said they are welcoming sponsors for the event to assist with it and they already have around 40 people signed up for the run, with hopes of getting close to 200. For more information, head to the website here.
