Two-vehicle collision sends drivers, kids to hospital (update: charges laid)

Woman charged with careless driving following crash at Livingstone and Stanley streets

A two-vehicle collision outside the East Bayfield Community Centre had traffic re-routed around the area Friday morning.

The intersection of Stanley and Livingstone streets was the scene of a collision between a pickup truck and a car around 10:54 a.m.

The impact was enough to flip the truck onto its side and scatter debris across Livingstone Street.

Barrie police Const. Don Langdon was at the scene to reconstruct the scene and told BarrieToday there were injuries and kids involved, but it's too early to tell how bad, though the children seemed to be OK, he added.

“There were small children involved in one of the vehicles. They were the children of the driver and both have been cleared from the hospital with minor injuries. I will be heading to the hospital now to check on the other two parties from both vehicles,” said Langdon.

“At the moment, the investigation is still ongoing and we have not been aware of any life-threatening injuries," he added.

The vehicles were not near each other after the collision, showing the force of the impact and just how far the pickup truck went after the crash.

“That’s your physics; the momentum of a heavy vehicle moving,” said Langdon.

“My understanding is the red vehicle was headed northbound, the blue pickup truck was heading east and they came into contact at the intersection,” said Langdon.

When asked if speed was a factor and if charges had been laid, Langdon was adamant on both.

“Speed is always a factor. At this point, it’s too early to say if it is a main factor in this one, but someone definitely didn’t do what they were supposed to do,” he said. “Pending the investigation, charges will be laid against the at-fault driver.”

Around 4 p.m., police said the driver of the pickup, a 38-year-old woman, has been charged with careless driving after she entered the intersection against the red light.

Roads have since re-opened in the area.
