Trial date to be set next week in Kassidi Coyle case

Large turn out of friends at Barrie courthouse Thursday

A trial date is expected to be set April 5 in the case of a young Barrie woman who died by suicide after an alleged sexual assault.

About 20 friends of Kassidi Coyle packed a small Barrie courtroom Thursday as lawyers held a judicial pre-trial behind closed doors with a judge.

The pre-trial, a routine, private meeting for the defence and crown to discuss the case with the judge, will continue April 24.

Kassidi's mother Judi and sister Chelsea sat in the front row of the courtroom awaiting the outcome of the court date.

Family and supporters all wore t-shirts with #JusticeForKassidi on the front and clutched pictures of Kassidi including Coyle who held a large photo of her youngest daughter.

Kassidi, 20, took her own life several months after the alleged sexual assault on Juy 1, 2016.

Her mother successfully requested a publication ban on Kassidi's identity be lifted by the court.

The accused, Shawn Roy, was not in court but his lawyer David Wilcox attended.

Wilcox has reportedly said his client maintains he did not commit the alleged assault.
