Three fires within 10 hours kept Barrie firefighters busy

Nobody was hurt in two house fires; Third fire at 400 Auto Collision has been deemed 'suspicious in nature'

It was a busy 10 hours for Barrie Fire as they responded to three separate calls last night and early this morning.

Firefighters received a call at approximately 6:20 p.m. Saturday related to a house fire on Henry Street. No one was injured as homeowners were not home at the time of the fire, but they will be displaced for some time due to damage.

Cause of the fire is undetermined, but investigators believe it may have been electrical in nature. Estimated damage is pegged at $80,000.

Barrie Fire’s Samantha Hoffmann told BarrieToday that the homeowners may have benefitted from a preventive initiative.

“On a positive note, they had received a visit from the Alarmed for Life campaign and had replaced all their alarms a week ago," she said.

Another call came in at 9 p.m. related to a house fire on Downsview Drive that was due to candles above a gas fireplace. The candles were melting and dripping on to the fireplace, generating smoke. The basement was ventilated and the family was allowed to return to the home.

The third call, at 3:20 a.m. Sunday morning, is suspicious in nature.

Crews were called to a fire at 400 Auto Collision at 24 George St. The fire was extinguished and the scene was turned over to Barrie Police and the Office of the Fire Marshal to investigate.
