Thirty-foot Christmas tree at Meridian Place almost ready for the holidays (5 photos)

'This will have that Rockefeller Center feel to it, being that it is a massive tree being delivered,' says BIA's Craig Stevens

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in downtown Barrie.

The Downtown Barrie Business Association (BIA) erected the 30-foot Christmas tree that will provide an excellent view for those passing by the new Meridian Place.

Workers from Drysdale’s Tree Farm, located south of Barrie, took care of obtaining the huge Norway spruce and setting it up in time for this coming weekend’s Santa Claus parade and festive events.

BIA managing director Craig Stevens told BarrieToday the tree is merely the beginning of what will be magical weekend for families to enjoy.

“We’re so thankful that Drysdale’s assisted us with this huge project and made sure it was all ready to go for Saturday when we have the official tree lighting and fireworks,” said Stevens.

“This will have that Rockefeller Center feel to it, being that it is a massive tree being delivered, and Drysdale’s has actually helped with that one in the past as well," he added. "Saturday will be an unbelievable night and a brand new experience with the new Meridian Place space for all to enjoy."

The tree was installed and held in place with an eight-by-10-foot stand and has approximately 18,000 low-draw LED lights on it to supply downtown Barrie with the magic of the season.

Stevens said that while a lot of work will be spent getting ready for the weekend from today until Friday, the planning for the tree began when the new central downtown space was created.

“The tree installation and Meridian Place’s ability to host the weekend’s festivities was actually discussed during the building of the space,” said Stevens. “The spot where the tree is was equipped with electrical capabilities in preparation of the tree being placed in the spot it is, right behind the stage and with a great visual of the lake and all the lights at Heritage Park.”

Saturday’s Tree Lighting Celebration begins at 3:30 p.m. as the Santa Claus Parade should end up at Meridian Place at approximately 5:30 p.m. as Santa gives the go-ahead to light up the tree and surrounding area. There will be live music, fireworks, face painting and free hot chocolate provided by Tim Hortons with a donation to the Barrie Food Bank or local toy drive.
