A third person has been charged in connection with Jordan Carter-Bonfield’s death, nearly two months after other charges were filed.

Donny Johnson, 44, of Orillia is charged with conspiring to commit an indictable offence.

After appearing in Orillia bail court on Monday, he was released into the custody of a surety on $10,000 bail and must remain in the surety’s residence at all times, only permitted to leave with the surety.

He is also under a weapons prohibition and is prohibited from possessing or consuming drugs or substances, except with a prescription.

When asked why it took so long for charges to be filed against Johnson, Orillia OPP Const. Martin Hill couldn’t provide specifics.

“Investigations take time,” said Hill. “We have to make sure we’re thorough and that everything is in order before laying charges. It’s important for us to do a thorough investigation for both the victim and the accused.”

Emergency crews responded to the parking lot of Tim Hortons on Westmount Drive in Orillia on July 30 at about 7:30 a.m., where Carter-Bonfield, 25, was found in medical distress, according to police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 17-year-old has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Carter-Bonfield. He cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He is next in court on Oct. 10 in Orillia.

His co-accused, 20-year-old Andrew Franklin, of Orillia, is charged with accessory after the fact to murder. His next court date is Sept. 26 in Barrie.

Johnson will next be in Orillia court on Oct. 16.
