Taking back the night

A lively crowd gathered at Barrie city hall on Thursday evening, united in the plight to end violence against women.

"I'm here because it is important to be heard and to talk about issues affecting women," said Sara Simmons, a Barrie woman attending her 5th rally.

"I want my daughters to feel safe. I want to make things better and maybe this is one way to have an impact."

The 17th annual Take Back the Night event was hosted by Athena's Sexual Assault Counselling & Advocacy Centre.

Kathy Wallis, executive director at Huronia Transition Homes, spoke about her own experience with sexual violence and the need to speak up.

Barrie women then marched through downtown streets, joining a global rally to bring attention to women's right to live without fear of violence.
