SUV collides with Orillia fire truck en route to crash

Police say no charges will be laid

The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a collision involving a fire truck in Orillia Wednesday.

On Oct. 17, 2018 at approximately 8:15 a.m., the Orillia OPP received a call of a collision on Highway 12 and Memorial Avenue in the City of Orillia.

The collision involved an Orillia Fire Department truck and a sports utility vehicle.

The fire truck was responding to a call and had its emergency lights on. The truck stopped at the red light then proceeded through the red light when it was believed to be safe.

A vehicle travelling the other way proceeded through the green light and struck the fire truck and then struck a telephone pole.

There were no injuries as a result of this collision.

The investigation into this matter is complete and neither the driver of the SUV or fire truck will be charged.

The Orillia OPP would like to remind motorists that it is their duty to be aware of emergency vehicles on our roads.

An emergency vehicle with its lights and sirens on can go through a red light provided it comes to a complete stop and is safe to proceed. Though in this particular case charges were not laid the safety of our first responders and the public is important.
