Steaks on the grill at Gilford United Church (6 photos)

Steak barbecue brings hundreds of diners to village in Innisfil

Church suppers and community dinners have always brought communities together – and not just to share a meal.

Just ask the guests at Gilford United Church’s annual Gilford Steak Barbecue on Saturday evening.

It was an opportunity for neighbours to meet and exchange news, sharing details of a recent trip or the newest grandkid, and reunited old friends and former residents – drawn back to Gilford by the promise of a perfectly barbecued steak, corn on the cob and home-baked pies.

It was easy to tell the ‘regulars.’ They came early to get the best seats, at the long tables set out under the trees.

And like Stewart Fisher, who was mayor of Innisfil in the 1990s, they brought their own steak knife.

As the volunteers grilled steaks and husked the corn, the crowds began to arrive for a community get-together, and a Gilford tradition.
