Spoken word event welcomes Canadian poetry legends

SIMCOE COUNTY DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

Grade 7 and 8 students from schools across the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) will take part in the 7th annual Spoken Word Poetry Slam on May 3.

Students present group and individual original spoken word poems about personal topics with a focus on mental health awareness. Awards are given for group, individual and school results. 

Keynote speakers Holly Painter and Wali Shah are two of the event judges.

Holly Painter is a three-time Grand Slam Champion of the London Poetry Slam and the National Director of Spoken Word Canada. She has spoken to over 50,000 students at over 60 schools across Ontario and worked with many community organizations.

Selected as one of Canada’s Top 20 Under 20 in 2014, Wali Shah is a Canadian speaker and poet and University of Toronto student. He combines social issues, experiences, comedy and his South Asian and Muslim background to bring his work to life.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the SCDSB Education Centre, located at 1170 Highway 26 in Midhurst.
