The City of Barrie is observing Drinking Water Week by recognizing the vital role tap water plays in daily life, the infrastructure that is required to carry it to homes and businesses and the critical work that water professionals do each day.
To commemorate the week, water utilities, water organizations, government entities, environmental advocates, schools and others throughout North America and beyond are encouraging consumers to learn more about the importance of water services and water infrastructure.
“Barrie water operations staff work hard around the clock to ensure high-quality drinking water is there when you need it,” said Diane Moreau, manager of water operations. “Water Week is a chance for all of us to appreciate and learn what it takes to bring that water to your tap.”
To recognize Water Week, water operations staff will be providing free public tours of the Surface Water Treatment Plant (20 Royal Parkside Dr.) on Wednesday, May 10. Two tours will be held, starting at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tours are approximately one hour in length.
Barrie is one of the only municipalities in Ontario that gets its water from both groundwater and surface water. On average approximately 37 million litres of water are produced each day in Barrie. Water quality is monitored 24/7 and thousands of samples are collected annually. Earlier this year, the City of Barrie achieved a 100 per cent score from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks or drinking water quality.
