Barrie OPP are investigating a collision between a snowmobile and a deer that sent the 56-year old sled driver to hospital.

Police say the man was taken to a local hospital and then airlifted to a Toronto-area hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The crash happened on the snowmobile trail between Line 4 and 5 in Oro-Medonte Township.

Barrie OPP, the Oro-Medonte Fire Department and Simcoe County Paramedic Service responded to the collision around 6 p.m. Thursday.

OPP Const. Graeme Knox says the crash happened during Snowmobile Safety Week.

The week is designated by the OPP and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs to remind sledders of snowmobile safety, to stay off lakes and waterways for now due to unstable conditions and obey the rules of the roads and trails.
