Snowmobile crash leaves rider with serious injuries

RAMARA – On Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017 approximately 7:50 p.m. the Orillia detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Rama Police Service were dispatched to Ramara Township where a male involved in a Motorized Snow Vehicle (MSV) collision was being taken off the ice with serious injuries.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a 62-year-old Severn Township male was operating his MSV on Couchiching Lake when he struck a rock on Ship Island.

This male was tended to by Georgian and Rama Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transported to an Orillia area hospital and then flown to a Toronto area hospital with life threatening injuries by ORNGE Air Ambulance. The condition of this male was later upgraded to critical but stable condition.

This collision is still under investigation. Further updates will be provided when more information becomes available. 

When operating a MSV please be aware of your surroundings at all times especially in conditions that are not ideal. 

Operating an MSV take a great deal of skill and preparation. Please prepare yourself for the known and unknown hazards alike.
