The South Simcoe Police Distracted Driving campaign of last week is being hailed as a success, but there's still room for improvement.

Over the 6 days from October 26 to October 31, 148 total charges were laid, along with 7 cautions.

13 drivers were handed the new higher penalty for distracted driving. The set fine for distracted driving went up to $400 on September 1.

6 drivers were cited for not wearing a seat belt, and officers also ticketed 96 speeders during the week, including 2 who lost their licences for a week after being charged with going more than 50 km/h over the limit.

"We still seeing too many people speeding and talking on their phones," said Traffic Sgt Lou Dasilva. "We need people to slow down and hang up the phone."

Distracted driving is quickly becoming one of the main causes of serious collisions.
