Singing group pitches free vocal workshops in Barrie

'We were very lucky. The sisterhood in our group is strong and we did not lose any members,' Barrie Soundwaves member says of pandemic

Barrie Soundwaves wants you to come make a little noise with them.

The local all female a cappella singing group, which boasts members ranging in age from 25 to 80 from all over Simcoe County, is the perfect opportunity for women who love to sing to do a little something just for them, says Tammy Mady, who joined the group in 2015.

The pandemic forced the group to rehearse online via Zoom, she says, but now that they're able to gather again in person, the group has decided to offer free vocal workshops to the community in the hopes of not only bringing a bit of awareness to who they are and what they do, but also potentially attract new members.

“We were very lucky," Mady told BarrieToday. "The sisterhood in our group is strong and we did not lose any members, in fact we even gained a few new members through different types of online events that we had,” she said. “Now that we are finally back together and rolling, we thought we would like to do something where we give back to the community and the community hears more about us… and maybe we can even gain some new members.”

The group is inviting women of all ages to its Harvest of Harmony event, free singing workshops that are scheduled for Sept. 27 and Oct. 4 at Sunnidale Park's Dorian Parker Centre from 7-9 pm. The workshops will culminate in a free concert on Tuesday, Oct. 11, Mady said.

“Women, moms in particular, do everything for everybody else, and don’t do anything for themselves. There are a lot of women out there who love to sing, but don’t get out there to sing, or think they can only sing in a church or formal choir,” she added. “This is a much more relaxed environment. Our harmonies are tight and incredible and it’s really fun to sing a capella, but we also move and dance and express ourselves while we are singing. It’s more about entertaining and enjoying.”

Whether you opt to just join in for the workshops, or join the group regularly, Mady said it’s a great opportunity to carve out some time just for you.

“This is an evening one night a week where they can give themselves a treat," she said.

No pre-registration is required. The group says participants must be COVID-vaccinated and mask wearing is optional.
