It came down to a shootout and Team USA came away with its fourth gold medal in World Junior Hockey Championship history at Montreal's Bell Centre on Thursday.
Troy Terry had the shootout winner, beating Team Canada's Carter Hart five-hole as Team USA beat Team Canada 5-4 in Thursday's gold medal game.
Keiffer Bellows had a pair of goals for the Americans while Adam Fox assisted on three goals. Charlie McAvoy chipped in with a goal and an assist. Colin White had the other American goal. Goaltender Tyler Parsons made 46 saves and stopped all five Canadian shooters in the shootout.
Thomas Chabot and Mathieu Joseph had a goal and an assist each for Team Canada. Nicolas Roy and Jeremy Lauzon also scored for Canada. Hart made 31 saves and stopped four of five US shooters in the shootout.
The Americans battled back from two-goal deficits on a pair of occasions in the game.
In the bronze medal game earlier Thursday, Denis Guryanov scored 31 seconds into overtime to give Team Russia a 2-1 win over Team Sweden.
Russian goaltender Ilya Samsonov made 38 saves on the victory, including 28 in the opening 40 minutes. Kirill Kaprizov had the other Russian goal.
Jonathan Dahlen had the lone goal for Sweden.
