Barrie Police are hunting for a suspect following an early morning sexual assault downtown in Heritage Park.

Police say a 34-year-old Barrie woman was attacked just after 5:00 a.m. near the park's public washrooms.

Police were called to the area of Bayfield Street and Chase McEachern Way after a passerby located the woman in the parking lot, along with a witness who reported seeing the suspect flee the area towards Mulcaster Street.

"The victim was sexually assaulted in Heritage Park just outside the washrooms and made her way out of the park to the nearby parking lot where a passerby heard her yelling for help," said Bamford.

"A witness that had been on scene with the victim observed a male fleeing the area heading north on Mulcaster Street."

The woman was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and later released. Police say the investigation is ongoing.

"At this time we don't have any evidence to suggest this was a random attack but people still need to be vigilant when they're out early in the morning and late at night," said Bamford.

The suspect is described as a white man, about 21 to 22 years old, with blonde shoulder length hair.

He is believed to have a medium build, is about 5'3" to 5'7" tall and was wearing a grey and white striped hoodie, white jeans and construction boots.

Investigators are looking to speak with anyone who may have been in the area of Heritage Park early Sunday morning.

Police also want anyone with information about the incident  to contact Sergeant Furlong of Investigative Services at (705)725-7025 ext. 2632 or 2129 or at [email protected] .

Anonymous information can be supplied to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or online at www.tipsubmit.com.
