Seven SCDSB students medal at Skills Ontario Competition

Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) students won four gold and three bronze medals at the 2017 Skills Ontario Competition (SOC) held in Toronto from May 1 to 3. 

The event promotes skilled trade and technology careers to youth by hosting skilled trades competitions for over 2,000 students from across Ontario in more than 67 contest areas. 

Medals were awarded to:

  • Caleb Mills from Bradford District High School – Gold in Cabinetmaking
  • Missy Archibald from Banting Memorial High School - Gold in Hairstyling
  • Sabrina Digaetano from Bear Creek Secondary School - Gold in Aesthetics 
  • Dalton Fehr from Innisdale Secondary School - Gold for Computer Aided Manufacturing
  • Owen Marling from Stayner Collegiate Institute – Bronze in Heating Systems
  • Kate Webster from Nantyr Shores Secondary School – Bronze in Restaurant Service
  • Ryan New from Barrie North Collegiate – Bronze in Auto Service

Caleb and Missy will represent the province of Ontario at the national competition held in Winnipeg at the end of May.

“We are very proud of our students for their efforts and results at the Skills Ontario Competition,” says Steve Blake, Director of Education. “Their accomplishments reflect their hard work and that of the staff who have supported them in learning about different trades.” 

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) and the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program provide significant support to the Skills Ontario Competition.
