Senior cat gets a new life with Coldwater home (3 photos)

It took 14 years, but Sammy finally found his home.

Born in a feral colony, the senior tabby cat lived at Furry Friends Animal Shelter. He saw the organization move and grow as Barrie grew.

And he saw hundreds of kittens and younger cats arrive and leave the shelter.

Yet while they were there, he would welcome the kittens to cuddle with him on his perch on a cat tree.

“He deserves a home. I wanted a sweet cat who loves to cuddle,” said Coldwater’s Tammy Halverson, whose two cats died in the past year.

“I gave myself some time to heal and I’m starting with an older cat. I just think if he needs a forever home, he deserves one.”

She went online to look for a feline companion and read the description written by Mel Hinch, Furry Friends’ adoptions coordinator. Hinch takes the time to get to know all the cats to increase the chances of making a good match.

Her description of Sammy is what caught Halverson’s eye and tugged on her heartstrings.

“He’s docile and laid back. He’s very sweet and stays by himself. Little kittens would climb up beside him to cuddle. He’s a gentle soul,” Hinch said.

The years haven’t been too hard on Sammy. He’s in good health, except he has no teeth.

He does have claws – and Halverson has a scratching post and has just bought a cat tree for him to climb.

“I ordered a nice big tree with a couple of ramps on it, so he doesn’t have to jump as he gets older,” said Halverson, who hadn’t expected to see Sammy jump to a high perch at the shelter.

He also has a nice bed of his own to enjoy.

“I'm so excited,” she said. “I’m off work (Friday) and have a whole three days to spend with him.”

Sammy went home to Coldwater Thursday.

This weekend is PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend.
