With the deadline just 10 days away, candidates continue to file their nomination papers ahead of this fall’s municipal elections in Barrie and its neighbouring towns and townships.
The nomination window opened May 1 and the deadline is July 27 at 2 p.m. to file the appropriate paperwork. Municipal elections will be held Oct. 22 across Ontario, with the new term beginning Dec. 1.
For the position of Barrie mayor, incumbent Jeff Lehman is the only person running so far. He filed on May 4.
In Ward 1, incumbent Bonnie Ainsworth has announced her retirement from politics, so the east-end district is up for grabs. Running in Ward 1 are Shaughna Ainsworth (June 11), Graham Allary (May 14), Ryan Cardwell (May 4), Avery Konda (May 30), Anne-Marie Kungl (May 31), Clare Riepma (May 1) and Cole Walsh (May 2).
In Ward 2, which covers downtown Barrie, candidates include Keenan Aylwin (July 16), Richard Forward (May 18), Yolando Gallo (May 7) and incumbent Rose Romita (June 20).
For Ward 3, in the city’s north end, only incumbent Doug Shipley has filed to run so far. He filed on May 2.
In Ward 4, located in the northwest portion of the city, candidates include Bryan Harris (June 6) and incumbent Barry Ward (June 13).
For Ward 5, in the city’s west end, the candidates are incumbent Peter Silveira (May 4) and Robert Thomson (May 17).
In Ward 6, located in the southwest end of the city, the candidates are Natalie Harris (June 26), Micheline Robichaud (May 1) and Steve Trotter (June 18), who was appointed to council partway through the last term following the resignation of Michael Prowse when he took the job as Barrie’s chief administrative officer.
In Ward 7, which encompasses the city’s far southwest end, only Gary Harvey (May 11) has filed his papers. The current councillor in that area is Andrew Prince.
Similarly, in Ward 8, which covers the Allandale area and down to McKay Road, candidates include Jim Harris (July 13), Brian Miller (July 13) and Brad Thompson (June 26). The incumbent is Arif Khan, who has not filed.
In Ward 9, incumbent Sergio Morales (July 11) is running again in the city’s southeast end.
In Ward 10, also located in the southeast end of the city, incumbent Mike McCann (May 11) in the only person to file papers.
