BARRIE – In conjunction with Veterans Affairs, Doug Shipley, MP for Barrie-Springwater-OroMedonte, and John Brassard, MP for Barrie-Innisfil, are pleased to announce the Second World War Tribute program.

To honour the bravery and sacrifice displayed more than 75 years ago, local Second World War Veterans can apply for the Second World War Tribute. This commemorative lapel pin and certificate of recognition were created to honour of the extraordinary role Canadians played in the Allied victory 75 years ago.

If you are or know a Second World War veteran that would like to apply for this program you can either contact your MP office or apply directly on the Veterans Affairs website

Quick Facts

  • There are roughly 30,000 living Canadian Second World War Veterans.
  • The commemorative lapel pin is based on the “Victory Nickel”, a coin that was circulated during the war and re-issued in 2005, commemorating the 60th anniversary of V-E Day. The coin featured a flaming torch and large “V”, which stood for both victory and the coin’s value in Roman numerals.
  • The Second World War Tribute program was launched in 2014 and will run until the end of 2020, roughly coinciding with the 75th anniversary of Canada’s engagement in the Second World War.

“We are incredibly proud of our Second World War veterans, and all of Canada’s veterans. It is a privilege to remember and honour the heroism and sacrifices made by those Canadians 75 years ago. We will never forget” - Doug Shipley, MP Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte

“Canadians for the second time in a generation, went overseas to fight against tyranny and hatred. They stood tall and gave their lives and their spirit for the cause of good. In 2020 there are few living Canadian WW2 Veterans, we owe those that are here and those that died before them our greatest respect.” - John Brassard, MP Barrie - Innisfil
