School secured while wildlife officials track injured bear (update)

10:30 a.m. update

BARRIE – Officers from the Barrie OPP and the Ministry of Natural Resources conducted a search for the bear, however, it was not located at this time.

The school authorities have been notified that the bear has not yet been located and they will keep their safety precautions in place.

If anyone observes a bear in the area the Barrie OPP would like to ask the public to notify the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and/or the Ministry of Natural Resources at 1-866-514-2327.

The Barrie OPP would like to remind the driving public to be aware that there are wild animals in the Oro-Medonte area and cross our roadways while on their journey’s.  Please keep this in mind, and be vigilant while driving in order to avoid collisions.

BARRIE – On Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016 at approximately 7:20 a.m. a collision occurred between a motor vehicle and what is described as a full sized bear on Old Barrie Road between Penetanguishene Road and Line 1 of Oro-Medonte Township.

This is near W.R. Best Public School. The school authorities have been notified and the school along with students have been secured for safety.

Officers from the Barrie Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are on scene along with Officers from the Ministry of Natural Resources who are currently tracking the bear.

The Barrie OPP, for the sake of public interest, would like to notify the public of this information so that if they see the injured bear they are asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or the Ministry of Natural Resource at 1-866-514-2327.
