NEWS RELEASE

SIMCOE COUNTY DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) is preparing to support Syrian newcomers as they transition into life in Canada.

The SCDSB will be providing information to school administrators to support them as they work to integrate new families into their school communities.

“Our goal is to support these newcomers to Canada, helping them to experience positive outcomes in our education system and beyond,” said Hanne Nielsen, Principal of Adult and Continuing Education. “The current situation may increase the number of individuals and families we serve, but as always we will strive to provide the services needed.”

In addition, the SCDSB Newcomer Welcome Centre will provide a variety of programs and services to support families new to Canada and to the schools they will attend within the SCDSB.

In cooperation with community partners, the Newcomer Welcome Centre will connect with all new families with school-aged children and determine what specific services they require to settle into our school communities.

“I’m confident that our staff, students and our broader school communities will demonstrate caring, empathy and inclusiveness as we work together to welcome these newcomers who settle in Simcoe County,” adds Kathi Wallace, Director of Education.
