School board trustees back at the table for new school year

School board trustees meet for the first time since June and ratify labour agreements

The Simcoe County District School Board ratified collective agreements reached with the local Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario for the term September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2017, and the Designated Early Childhood Educators' agreement, reached August.

It was the first Board meeting since June, also approved terms and conditions reached with local principals and vice-principals for September 1, 2014 to August 31, 2018.

Trustees also accepted the retirement notice from Superintendent of Education Paul Sloan, effective Aug. 31.

His replacement is Douglas Paul - named Supervisory Officer - Superintendent of Education K-12.

Paul is currently the principal of Clearview Meadows Elementary School.

He started with the SCDSB in 1989 as a teacher at Worsley Elementary School and became a vice-principal in 1999 at Baxter Central Public School, and a principal in 2001 at Byng Public School.

In addition, he has volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Georgian Triangle, most recently as the President of the Board of Directors.

The following school administrator appointments were also approved by the Board this week:\

  • Francesca Telesco from external to W.H. Day E.S.

Elementary Principal Appointments effective Aug. 29, 2016:

  • Jacqueline Linton from W.H. Day E.S. to Clearview Meadows E.S.

Elementary Vice-Principal Transfers effective Aug. 29, 2016

  • Andrea Wall from W.C. Little E.S. to Sunnybrae P.S.
  • Jo-Dee Duffett from Sunnybrae P.S. to W.C. Little E.S.

Also, the following student trustees were sworn in at the meeting, for the new school year:

  • North and East Region - Matt Thorhauge, Georgian Bay District Secondary School
  • South and West Region - Grace Leyshon, Stayner Collegiate Institute
  • Central and South Region - Zak Mattila, Barrie North Collegiate Institute

Student trustees are elected by their peers in each school zone.

They participate in board meetings, and their role is to "bring student perspectives to public board discussions, increase the board's awareness of issues of concern to students . . . and help to foster effective communication between the Board and students."
