NEWS RELEASE

SIMCOE COUNTY DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

The Ministry of Education announced that the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) will receive capital funding to build a new public elementary school in east Alliston including a two room childcare facility.

The board will also receive funding for an addition at Elmvale District High School, as well as a two room childcare addition at Orchard Park Public School in Orillia.

These projects were capital priority business cases submitted by the SCDSB to the Ministry of Education in July 2015 as part of the SCDSB’s Capital Plan.

“This is great news for these communities,” says Peter Beacock, Chairperson of the Board. “Staff worked diligently to prepare business cases to help the Ministry of Education understand our needs. The Board of Trustees approved those business cases as part of our commitment to continuing to provide safe and appropriate spaces for learning and teaching. This funding announcement shows that the Ministry of Education supports that commitment.”

The new public school in Alliston will be located on John W. Taylor Avenue.

The school will help address enrolment pressures currently experienced in the area as a result of population growth.

The addition to Elmvale District High School will help address enrolment pressures and provide the community with facility upgrades which will result in an increase in programming options.

Notes Kathi Wallace, Director of Education, “Funding announcements like these are positive news for our board and for the communities we serve. New schools and major additions like those announced today allow us to continue to improve the programming we offer our students. We look forward to working with these municipalities and other community partners as we design and build new spaces for the children and youth in these communities to learn and grow.”

A full list of capital investments is available on the Ministry of Education’s website.
