The Simcoe County Rovers FC Men’s Club continued their surge up the League1 standings last Sunday with a thrilling 2-2 draw against Vaughan Azzurri.

Down 2-1 to Azzurri (now 3-0-2) in the 87th minute, Reshon Phillip scored a penalty kick for his second goal in as many games to tie the contest at two.

The draw extends the men’s (3-1-2) unbeaten streak to three games and moves them into a tie with Azzurri for third place in the League1 standings.

The surging Rovers are only one point behind Alliance United FC for second place in the League1 standings ahead of their home match against BVB IA Waterloo (2-3-1) on Sunday from J.C. Massie Field at Georgian College.

The three-game unbeaten streak is not the only positive around the Rovers as of late, as the team announced on Saturday that striker Leaford Allen has transferred to the New Zealand Central Premier League.

Allen, who scored the first goal in Rovers history last month, becomes the first Rover to transfer to a higher level of football.

With one player leaving, the team announced a new addition on Friday, as Jacob Grant has been signed on for the remainder of the 2022 season.

Grant, a striker from St. John’s, NL, most recently played for the University of Evansville.

Last weekend was not as kind to the women’s side, who lost 5-3 in a high-scoring affair to Unionville Milliken SC for their first loss of the season.

The women fell to 4-1-0 on the season with the loss, but their hot start allowed them to remain one point behind second place in the League1 standings ahead of their Wednesday night battle with North Mississauga FC (1-4-1).

And they responded on the road on Wednesday with a 1-1 draw against North Mississauga.

Cloey Uddeneberg scored her team-leading fifth goal for the ladies side, who now return home on Sunday to host the 6-0-0 FC London in a highly-anticipated battle between two of the best teams in the league.
