While Easter weekend is still a week away, there is lots of planning left to do for Rose Romita’s Free Community Easter Dinner.

The Trinity Anglican Church will be the new location for the annual event which will take place Monday, April 2 from 12 to 5 p.m. Downtown Barrie councillor Rose Romita has been hosting the dinner for about 10 years and feels that it is a great way to give back to those who need it in our community.

“I’ve been doing the Christmas dinner for over 20 years and added Easter about 10 years ago,” said Romita. “I had a business downtown and saw first-hand the need for this dinner; at that time no one was doing any dinners. The feeling that one gets when helping others is fantastic and there is no us versus them. Everyone feels equal regardless of faith, gender or culture. There is always a welcoming group of people, an endless and full buffet lunch and of course karaoke and everybody is welcome.”

The event usually feeds between 300 to 400 people and serves approximately 800 meals to not only the less-fortunate at a time when most are enjoying a home-cooked Easter dinner, but is open to anyone which means Romita and her team could always use more food and help.

“The menu will consist of baked ham, mashed potatoes, vegetables, Caesar salad and an assortment of baked goods,” said Romita. “What we are in need most of right now are some more donations and definitely more help; we could really use more volunteers.”
