Rose Romita calls for help with annual Easter dinner

It’s important to care about the next guy, and the Easter season, probably more so than Christmas, points up that need.

For many, Easter is a reminder that life is finite and that the measure of our lives lies in the service we provide. It illustrates the full spectrum of what it means to be human, especially when considering how Jesus was betrayed, arrested, humiliated, crucified, and ultimately, rose from the grave to teach his followers that death need not be the end of life.

Unlike Christmas, when giving and charity work is often top of mind, Easter is not typically thought of as a time to serve others.

The need for food, clothing, shelter and companionship continues at this time of year, especially among those in the community who are vulnerable, in need or lonely.

Rose Romita knows this well. The long-time Barrie City Councillor is the prime mover behind various holiday meals throughout the year for those who otherwise have nowhere else to go. Easter is no exception.

The free community Easter dinner she has been serving up for many years will be served this year on Monday Apr. 17, at Central United Church, located at 54 Ross St. Lunch from noon to 6 p.m. and it is, as always, open to everyone.

“We will be serving a traditional Easter dinner,” Rose tells Barrie Today, “including ham, potatoes and vegetables, along with assorted desserts.”

While folks are enjoying a meal prepared by their neighbours and the good spirits they provide, they'll be entertained by Barrie DJ, Music of our Times. Diners are also invited to grab the mic and sing karaoke during the dinner.

“You are also welcome to bring your own instrument and play or sing,” Romita adds.

Of course, she can’t do it alone so Romita is calling for volunteers to help set up, cook, serve, clean up and share in the occasion. If the general feeling of warmth from helping others appeals to you, Rose Romita would like to hear from you.

In particular, “I am looking for donations of hams, desserts, pop and treats for the children. Also, cash donations would be greatly appreciated to purchase last minute supplies.”

The free Easter dinner is being held Easter Monday, Apr. 17, from noon to 6 p.m. at Central United Church on Ross Street. Again, all are welcome to join, and all helping hands are appreciated.

If you would like to donate or volunteer, please contact Rose at (705) 722-7763.
