The Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s volleyball teams travelled to take on the George Brown Huskies on Thursday night in Toronto.

The games were originally scheduled to be played Wednesday, but were postponed due to inclement weather.

In the men’s game, the Grizzlies were pushed to the limit by the Huskies in a tight, five-set match.

After dropping the first set, the Grizzlies rallied to take the next two sets before George Brown won set four to send it to a tiebreaker.

Georgian focused in on the fifth set and were able to take a close match 3-2 (20-25, 25-19, 25-17, 22-25, 15-10).

Jordi Romero (Brampton) led the way for the Grizzlies with a 14-kill performance while teammates Erich Perau (Peterborough) had 13 points, Darien Haynes (Barrie) and Bowen Mitton (Australia) each had 12 points.

Liam Gray (Barrie) had a season-high 47 assists in the match and he currently sits second overall in the OCAA averaging 9.00 assists-per-set.

The win clinches the OCAA east division for the Grizzlies as they now have a 15-2 record on the season with one game to play. Divisional opponents, the La Cite Coyotes have finished the regular season at 15-3 with Georgian holding the tiebreak depending on the results of their final game.

It was a tough match for the Grizzlies in the women’s game.

Georgian battled but were unable to stop the Huskies scoring as the Grizzlies fell in straight sets 3-0 by scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-21.

Domenica De Francesco (Barrie) had a team high six points while Kelsey Watson (Barrie) had five points in the loss.

The loss puts the Grizzlies in a tight playoff race. The victory moved the Huskies one win ahead of the Grizzlies and George Brown sits in fifth place. Georgian currently sits in a tie for sixth place with a 6-11 record along with the Seneca Sting. Both teams are currently ahead of the La Cite Coyotes who finished the season with a 6-12 record and are in eighth place.

The easiest playoff scenario for the Grizzlies is to win their final remaining game and they will be guaranteed a playoff spot.

The Grizzlies will play their final regular season games of the season on the road this Saturday, Feb. 9 when they travel to take on the Loyalist Lancers in Belleville.

Georgian’s men’s volleyball team will host a playoff game tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 16 against a to be determined opponent. Exact details will be announced early next week.
