Roller coaster temps make for unsafe ice: OPP

Open water on parts of Lake Simcoe

Ice fishing huts dotted Kempenfelt Bay Saturday despite mild temps, warnings about thin ice and open water visible in some areas of Lake Simcoe.

"The fluctuating and roller coaster like temperatures have resulted in unsafe ice conditions," said OPP Sgt. Peter Leon. "Just this week we had 2 more sledders go through the ice on lakes in the Huntsville and Burk's Falls area."

Open water is visible at some locations and an ice report posted on the Lake Simcoe Message Board warned many parts of the lake "are becoming very unstable."

"I have never seen ice this volatile," posted John Whyte of Time on Water Canada. "Anglers should constantly check and be aware of their conditions and plan alternate exit strategies"

Whyte wrote a warm day with high winds could cause miles of ice to break away and start drifting.

Today's forecast is calling for a high of 9 and windy.
