A 79-year-old Barrie man is charged in connection with a fire Wednesday night at a Barrie retirement and long-term care home.

Flames broke out in a third floor room just after 6:30 p.m. at the Woods Park Care Centre on Lillian Cres.

The fire was contained to one room which had been engulfed in flames when Barrie Fire arrived.

The room sustained extensive damage.

Barrie Police Investigative Services and the Ontario Fire Marshal's office determined the fire was a result of arson.

The suspect, a resident of the facility, is charged with arson disregard for human life and arson damage to property.

He remains in hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and will be appearing before a bail court judge via video remand.

As a result of the blaze, Barrie Police say 60 residents were displaced from the floor and moved to another wing of the building.
