Public school board debates later Christmas break in 2022

Simcoe County District School Board proposing 2022-23 winter holiday run from Dec. 26 to Jan. 6, which deviates from provincial suggestion

On the heels of the 2021-22 winter break, schools boards are turning some of their attention to plans for the next school calendar year, and want to hear your feedback.

The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) is looking for family input into the 2022-23 school calendar, and they are proposing one significant deviation from the provincial suggestions.

The province is recommending next year’s winter break run from Dec. 19 to Dec. 30 inclusive. The SCDSB is proposing pushing the break back, instead running from Dec. 26 to Jan. 6.

“The proposed calendar and timelines for the winter break align with previously approved school year calendars when the Christmas holiday has fallen late in the week or on a weekend,” said Sarah Kekewich, spokesperson for the public board.

Board chair Jodi Lloyd says the SCDSB works with the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board on their school calendars as they share buses, so both schedules need to align.

“There are lots of boards that change (their schedules),” said Lloyd. “Boards across the province don’t necessarily align with the provincial recommendations. There are various reasons. Nothing is finalized until we get that feedback.”

Public feedback on the entire calendar will be accepted by the school board until Jan. 11.

After that time, the feedback will be presented to school board trustees for a vote at a future meeting.
