Province pledges $94K for Barrie seniors programs

Funding will be used for healthy-living programming at Allandale 55+ Centre and Parkview 55+ Centre

On Tuesday afternoon, Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte MPP Doug Downey and Barrie-Innisfil MPP Andrea Khanjin announced that the City of Barrie will be receiving $94,454 to support seniors healthy living programs at the Allandale 55+ Centre and the Parkview 55+ Centre.

The announcement was part of a $14.1 million provincial pledge to 300 Seniors Active Living Centre programs across the province.

“This is part of our provincial-wide strategy to... look ahead. How can we help seniors to stay in their homes longer? Part of that is living healthy, active lives,” said Khanjin. “This is part of us helping to build better communities.”

Some examples of programs funded through the investment are physical fitness programs such as yoga or pickleball, social outings such a trips to museums or galleries, educations programs such as tax clinics or technology classes and wellness programs.

Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman expressed his gratitude at the announcement.

“Our 55+ programs are a point of pride for us in the city. Thank you so much for the free ad for our activities,” he said, with a laugh. “Both of our MPPs are huge advocates for our seniors in this community. There’s a clear pattern here, and I want to express my gratitude on a broader level."
