Power of the purse looks to help women dress for success

Event aims to help empower women to get back on their feet

An event aimed at helping women get back on their feet is pulling out all the purse strings to do so.

The 4th annual Power of the Purse fundraiser in support of Dress for Success Orillia and Barrie will take place at the Barrie Country Club on Feb. 1. Event specialist Shelly Skinner said the event is designed to help Dress for Success raise money for the services they provide for the women who need them.

“Typically the women are coming from situations where they’ve come out of a shelter or another local community organization that is helping people get back on their feet,” said Skinner. “We help them write a resume, give them mock interviews and even have them pick out three different outfits to help them hit the ground running.”

The event’s name comes from the many purses designed by both big and small brands. There are also local designers who have contributed handbags that will be auctioned in the night’s silent auction.

There will also be many prizes from a golf and overnight stay at Taboo Muskoka Resort and tickets to the production of Hamilton. Skinner told BarrieToday it is expected to be a great night out with wine from Colio Estates Winery and complimentary hors d'oeuvres,

“The great thing is it is a wonderful girls’ night out and really cool bonding experience as we can do our best to help out others who are so close to getting their life back on track,” said Skinner. “The event is for everyone and we want to pack the place and show some love to those who need it.”

Power of the Purse is Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Barrie Country Club from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at their website.
