Five men charged after Barrie police raided two marijuana dispensaries had their first court appearances Wednesday and were all remanded to later dates.

They are charged with trafficking a controlled substance and possession for the purpose of trafficking.

None of the accused actually attended but were represented by lawyers.

Two of the accused from Sunrise Medicinal had their cases put over to Oct. 26.

The three others from Med West were remanded to Nov. 2.

A small group of supporters gathered outside the Barrie courthouse holding signs that read "Patients are not criminals" and "Save our dispensaries."

"I'm here to support our cause to support our local dispensaries," said Teri Verch, a client of Med West. "We want them here. We need them here as medical marijuana patients. We want the choice."

The Barrie Police Street Crime Unit executed a Controlled Drug and Substance Act warrant at Sunrise Medicinal and Med West during the early hours of Aug. 30.

Investigators say neither store front was licensed to produce or distribute marijuana by Health Canada.

The dispensaries were targeted after police say they received complaints from the public.

Police seized a large quantity of cash and drugs.
