Police say store security dragged by fleeing shoplifting suspect

The officer suffered a non-life-threatening head injury

On June 28, 2016 at approximately 8:25 p.m. a male suspect entered the Shopper's Drug Mart on Wellington Street in the City of Barrie.

The suspect was observed by the on duty Loss Prevention Officer concealing several bottles of fragrances in his pockets.

The suspect then ran out of the store without paying for the concealed items. The Loss Prevention Officer chased after the suspect yelling at him to stop as he was under arrest for theft.

The suspect refused to stop and entered into the passenger seat of a silver Chevrolet Uplander van. There was no licence plate obtained for the suspect vehicle.

The Loss Prevention Officer approached the vehicle and reached inside in an attempt to recover some of the stolen property.

The suspect vehicle then started to drive away and the Loss Prevention Officer was struck and dragged by the vehicle for approximately 10 feet.

The Loss Prevention Officer then dropped to the ground where he sustained a non-life-threatening head injury.

 The suspect is described as:

  • Male, white
  • 5'10''
  • heavy build
  • scruffy face

Clothing description:

  • Wearing a black baseball cap with "Wilson" written on the front
  • Black leather jacket
  • Blue shirt
  • Black t-shirt
  • Blue jeans

Witnesses believe the driver of the vehicle may have been a female but no description was obtained.
