Pole fire knocks out power for parts of Barrie

Several downtown shops affected following blaze near Perry Street

No, everyone didn't turn on their air-conditioners at the same time on a sweltering Thursday afternoon.

But more than 800 customers were without power, including sections of downtown Barrie, this afternoon due to a pole fire near Milligan’s Pond.

A representative from Alectra told BarrieToday the outage was caused by the pole that caught fire in the Perry Street area, that’s now been isolated.

“Crews have been dispatched and are currently working to restore power to 860 customers,” said Alectra spokesperson Rosa Mejia.

Mejia said Alectra expected power to be restored for all customers between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., today.

However, as of 4 p.m., Alectra was not reporting any outages on its online map.

Some downtown businesses were without electricity for about a half-hour while crews worked to fix the problem.

Several traffic lights throughout the downtown were also knocked out.
