NEWS RELEASE
CITY OF BARRIE

Interesting fact: Salt does not work properly when the temperature is colder than -12. In temperatures like today, the City pre-wets the salt with an organic material which allows the salt to work up to -30. The organic material also allows the city to use less salt and prevents salt from bouncing off the roads when applied.

Priority roads

Combination units (plows/salters) were out plowing/salting arterial roads at 2 a.m. City trucks are continuing to apply salt this morning.

Two units are out maintaining drifting snow in the south end.

Secondary roads

Residential roads were plowed by City crews at midnight, and are nearing completion. City sand trucks are following to apply sand on all residential streets.

Priority sidewalks

Crews finished on priority sidewalks at 9 p.m. yesterday, and there is no planned work for today.

Secondary sidewalks

Crews were on residential sidewalks at 4 a.m., and will continue until 4 p.m. plowing and sanding operations. A downtown crew was also dispatched at 4 a.m. to apply salt to sidewalk approaches

Reminder: Overnight parking by-law

As per the Overnight Parking By-law, on-street parking is not permitted from 3–6 a.m. within the Downtown Business Improvement Area, and on other City streets from 12:01–7 a.m., Dec. 1 through March 31. This ensures the City can completely clear streets of snow and that large emergency vehicles can get down the street.
