Cycling has seen an explosion in popularity throughout the pandemic. Bicycles are sold out everywhere and people of all ages are taking to the trails like never before.

A not-for-profit initiative, led by nationally recognized athletes and coaches, is looking to build on this enthusiasm and introduce mountain biking to kids ages six to 16. They will be taught by some of the best coaches in the province with the goal to learn to love the sport and ride in a way that is safe and respects other trail users.

“The reality is that we have some of the best mountain biking in Ontario right in our backyard. We want to give kids the skills to learn to race or simply to love the sport,” said Coach Andrew Watson.

The growth in mountain biking can be partly attributed to the pandemic-friendly nature of the sport. Maintaining physical distance is easy and the sport is practiced individually. The program has been set up to be pandemic-safe and will follow strict public health guidelines.

Starting in early May these rides will run each Monday (Midland) and Tuesday (Horseshoe) evenings until the end of August. All rides will be led by an experienced team of coaches who know the trails and terrain. All abilities are welcome and riders will be placed into age/ability appropriate groups.

A parents virtual Town hall is planned for Thursday, March 18 at 7 p.m. coaches and coordinators will be going over the program outline and are available to answer any questions parents may have. Sign-up information for the online video call is available on our website. Please visit awicycling.com for further information or registration.
