A new community garden is being planned for one of Barrie's parks and the public is being asked to participate in the selection process.

The City of Barrie, along with Urban Pantry Barrie and the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, is hosting a public consultation meeting on Thursday.

Urban Pantry co-ordinator Jenna Zardo says there are five parks under review: Eastview Community Park, Queens Park, Bear Creek Park, Blair Creek and Shear Park.

"There are several factors that make a great location, including water access, proximity to housing and public transit, sun/shade requirements and a community of engaged citizens," Zardo said.

"Another consideration would be if the location is in a food desert, which means no nearby grocery store," she added.

On Thursday, Aug. 16, the public is invited to a drop-in session with informational displays.

There will also be Urban Pantry exhibits on its various programs including FruitShare, Good Food Box and Cooking UP.

Living Green and Christian Unity High School will also have displays.

The meeting will be at the City Hall Rotunda from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

The city is also asking the public to fill out a survey after the meeting (before Aug. 24) with that feedback included in a report to council in September.
