If you should spot rapidly rising star Madison Mueller busking on the streets of Barrie this summer – that is, when she gets home from playing a gig in Collingwood this weekend – take a selfie with her, or just get a really good look at her.

Because, before you know it, the 17-year-old singer-songwriter will be off on the road once again, playing several gigs over the next few weeks, and, ultimately, will be headed to Nashville!

On Sept. 8, she’ll be up for four trophies at the Josie Awards at Dollywood (yes, that Dollywood, as in Dolly Parton’s park). Madison is nominated in the young adult artist, young adult vocalist and music video categories, as well as for song of the year for her piece, Breath of Air. The Josies recognize all stripes of independent music, not just country.

As one can imagine, Mueller is “super-excited to head back to Nashville in September to meet some amazing people and be a part of such a great community.”

Madison tells Barrie Today her songs come from actual experience, but with “an uplifting feel within them, sort of like the good guy defeating the bad guy. I like to try to deliver hope, because it makes me feel better, and those that listen are getting a sense of joy from the music as well.”

Mueller released her third single, Got This Way, last February, about the feelings involved in being in a relationship.

“I hadn’t felt a lot of those feelings before and I wanted to write a song for the person that I with at the time. They song reflects a lot of good memories that came with that relationship and I am happy that I will always have a reminder of how nice it was.”

Breath of Air – her Josie-nominated song – came out of boredom with homework (haven’t all teens felt that?) “I needed to get my mind off of what I was doing for a while so, I started to strum the ukulele.

“I was thinking of wanting to be anywhere but in my basement doing homework, and the song was about trying to find a happy place of some sort.”

Still, there’s nothing like the first aired single. For Mueller, it was Who Am I, which came out in 2016, about making choices about high school courses.

“All my teachers were saying that these choices (were) so important because they (would) define my career and what I wanted to do. I was very stressed about what I was going to do with my life, and writing the song gave me some of the answers I needed.”

Madison, heading into her last year at St. Joan of Arc, indicates she’s “all in” with the music thing once her studies are behind her.

“I am taking the year to put everything I have towards writing, playing and performing music so I plan to release an EP (Extended Play) in the next year. I do not have a specific date quite yet, but it will be announced as soon as I know!”

What she’ll never forget was the Millenium Music conference last winter in Pennsylvania.

“I got to perform two nights in a row at different venues, making them my first official out-of-the-country performances. It was amazing to be surrounded by so much talent and so many people who share the same interests.

Madison Mueller has other shows planned for before heading to Nashville, dates and places yet to be confirmed.

“All of my shows will be posted ahead of time on my Facebook page and on Reverbnation.”
