Handcrafted savory and sweet pies made fresh with flavourful fillings in a flaky, buttery crust.
Is your mouth watering yet?
That's the description the Craft Pie Co. offers for its 5 " pot pies being served up at the new shop on Napier Street.
Owner Rhys Jenkins is a self-taught baker who along with his wife wanted to prepare easy, tasty meals for busy lifestyles.
"Our motto is 'eat together' so everyone's not on the go. We thought we'd do prepared foods for families so everyone can be at the dinner table," said Jenkins, keeping an eye on a massive pot of savoury filling simmering on the stove.
"We stumbled across pot pies and thought, it's kind of a fun memory that we always had."
Jenkins' career in the kitchen began when he was about ten years old.
"My mom would allow me to skip school but I'd have to help her cook in the kitchen," he explained. "Mom's side of the family was big and it was all about food for them so that probably helped out with a lot of what I do today."
Craft Pie Co. pies come in several flavours including sloppy joe, curry chicken, roasted vegetable and braised beef.
There are sides of hand cut fries and craft sauce and you can top off the meal with a seasonal sweet feature.
Eighty percent of sales are frozen pies and Jenkins says it's tough to play favourites with his creations.
"They're all my recipes so they're all my favourites," he said. "They all made the cut. I guess right now the curry chicken is my favourite."
Jenkin's wife is from Barrie, he's from Niagara and they met in Toronto.
They now have a one-year old so they moved back to Barrie last year to be closer to his wife's family.
He makes all the fillings and the dough and says the secret to a great pot pie is in the crust.
"The crust and then filling second. I guess what we're used to is chunks of chicken and frozen peas and carrots but we try to do the wholesome ingredients. It starts with the crust and we have the best crust."
Craft Pie Co. is located at 162 Napier Street.
