On Nov. 2, Maple Grove Public School was recognized by the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA) and received the Healthy Lands Award.

The school was recognized for their work in preserving native and aquatic plants for their watershed project. Each year, the LSRCA celebrates Lake Simcoe’s watershed heroes with members of the community, elected officials and environmental leaders.

Maple Grove Public School has partnered with the LSRCA over the last two years to educate students about their watershed and how to protect it.

“This recognition from the LSRCA means so much to us, especially the students,” says Greg Smith, Grade 6/7 teacher, Maple Grove Public School. “The students in our Environmental Cabinet have really taken a leadership role in planting a wide variety of species to increase the biodiversity of our outdoor classroom.”

In addition to the outdoor classroom, the school property also features a ‘No Mow’ zone, with plans to expand it into a restorative garden. The school currently holds a Gold Ontario EcoSchools certification and is preparing for a Platinum-level certification.
