Man stabbed, three taken hostage on Dunlop Street East (update)

Suspect in custody and hostages unhurt

3 p.m. update:

Police say a 42-year-old Barrie man is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault with a weapon and three counts of breach of probation in connection with an early morning stabbing on Dunlop Street East.

Const. Sarah Bamford says the suspect appeared in bail court Tuesday afternoon and was remanded in custody.

The 26-year-old stabbing victim is in stable condition at RVH.

Police say everyone involved in this incident was known to each other.

Original story:

Barrie Police say an altercation and stabbing between two men escalated into a hostage-taking early Tuesday morning on Dunlop Street East.

Officers were called just after 5 a.m. for a disturbance at 186 Dunlop Street East.

"Two men had an altercation and one was stabbed in the stomach," said Barrie Police Const. Sarah Bamford.

The suspect then fled to 145 Dunlop Street East and barricaded himself inside an upstairs apartment along with three other people.

"It was a hostage situation. He had three hostages inside and he wasn't going to let them out. It was forcible confinement," said  Bamford. "He barricaded himself inside and he held them hostage, not with a weapon."

Police evacuated two other apartments and people from those were taken to a city bus to sit inside due to the cold weather.

Officers contained the area and within a short time the suspect, a 42-year-old Barrie man, was taken into custody without incident.

There were no physical injuries to the three hostages.

The victim is a 26-year-old Barrie man.

He was transported to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre with a stab wound and is currently in stable condition.

Details of charges against the suspect will be released later in the day and police expect to be on scene most of the day, Bamford said.
