A man killed in a collision Wednesday near Victoria Harbour had become a new father only three months earlier.
Joey Baker, 26, and his partner Marinez Robitaille welcomed baby James into their lives on June 11.
“Joey was loved by many and will be very missed by all those in his life,” Tasha Robitaille wrote on Facebook in tribute to Baker who died at the scene after his pickup truck collided with a dump truck on Highway 12 between Gratrix and Fraser roads.
“What a tragic loss. We are thinking of you Marinez and everyone that has had Joey in their lives…we are so sorry…there are no correct words.”
Tasha and Taylor Robitaille, who are cousins of Marinez, have set up a fundraiser "as a means to support Marinez throughout these challenging times.”
As of mid-morning Friday, the GoFundMe has raised more than $11,000.
The pair go on to note that any donation is “incredibly appreciated” and encourage donors to leave a heartfelt note for Marinez.
Taylor Robitaille noted: “I love you and James more than words. We’ve got you my girl.”
Other donors have also expressed their support and love for the young couple.
“I am so sorry to hear of your terrible loss,” Lisa Robitaille wrote. “Please know that I am thinking of you and your family...you are all in my thoughts and prayers...Big Hugs to you all…”
Added Janet Leonard: “Our deepest condolences to you and your family at this very difficult time.”
Southern Georgian Bay OPP said the cause of the collision, which led to the closure of the highway for 12 hours, is still under investigation.
Anyone who might have witnessed the crash or has dash cam footage is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or [email protected].
