Macbeth set to cast an outdoor spell in upcoming local run

'We have really made the forest look sinister to give it a different feel than last year,' says official; Play runs from Aug. 28 to Sept. 8

One of Shakespeare’s best-known works will be shown in a location that is quickly becoming the ideal place to take in The Bard’s plays.

Burro’d Theatre presents MacBeth at 61 Park St. in Barrie starting on Aug. 28 and producer/actor Iain Moggach told BarrieToday that despite years of theatre experience, he's never been more nervous and excited all at once.

“It’s Macbeth. Depending on who you speak with, it just doesn’t get bigger than this,” said Moggach. “I will be playing Macbeth and while it is such a huge role and one I’m so excited to do, the whole play is so well-known that there is no room for error, and there are also a lot of lines to memorize with big parts.

"But my fiancee, Marissa, will be playing Lady Macbeth, so the excitement certainly outweighs any nerves,” he added with a chuckle.

Scottish Lord Macbeth receives a prophecy from a trio of witches, and he and his wife are consumed by ambition, leading to bloody consequences.

With fighting, blood, witchcraft and ghosts involved, the play has long been a favourite of audiences.

Based on the success of last year’s performance of Midsummer Night’s Dream at the same location, the backyard of Moggach and Caldwell, big things are expected for the Scottish play.

“Last year we had the backyard looking like a fairy tale in a forest and being a play that took place mainly in a forest, it worked,” said Moggach. “Macbeth has many castle scenes and a darker feel, so we have really made the forest look sinister to give a different feel than last year.”

Rehearsal for the production started in July and will see nine actors perform from Wednesday, Aug. 28 to Sunday, Sept. 8, with a special show at Friday Harbour at 391 Big Bay Point Road in Innisfil.

Tickets are $20+ tax and are available here.
