Each year in Ontario, preventable dental issues like gum disease, infections and chronic pain lead to more than 60,000 emergency department visits — a significant portion of which are by seniors.

To address this serious health concern, the government of Ontario created the Low-Income Seniors Dental Program. Today, the provincial government officially opened the program and are now accepting applications.

“This is an investment that will help many seniors to live healthier and happier lives,” said Doug Downey, MPP for Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte. “I frequently hear from constituents with this concern, which tells me there is a definite need for this program in our communities. This program will provide specialized care for one of our most vulnerable populations, while also easing strain on our local emergency room.”

Ontario seniors with a single income of less than $19,300 per year, or couples with an income of less than $32,000 per year and no dental insurance may be eligible for support. The program will cover a wide variety of services such as X-rays and surgeries, and will partially cover prosthodontic services like dentures.

Successful applicants will receive a welcome package and a new dental care card in the mail. Individuals will be able to receive services by presenting their card to their local Public Health Unit, participating Community Health centre, Aboriginal Health Access Centre, or Mobile Service Centre.

Applications can also be picked up from the Constituency Office of MPP Doug Downey at 14-20 Bell Farm Road in Barrie.
