This week is Fire Prevention Week in Canada and the United States. The theme of Fire Prevention Week this year is “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.”

The focus of Fire Prevention Week is to educate people regarding three basic and essential steps that can be taken to reduce the likelihood of experiencing a fire, and how to safely escape if a fire does occur. These steps include:

  • Determine places fire could start by taking a good look around your home and identifying potential fire hazards;
  • Listen for the sound of your smoke alarm; you could have only minutes to escape safely once your smoke alarm sounds; and
  • Learn two exit points out of every room in your home.

Oro-Medonte Fire and Emergency Services will be throughout the community this week providing public education regarding these three important life-saving steps.

Please plan to join Oro-Medonte crews at one of the following information sessions. Firefighters will be available to help answer any fire related questions, and provide materials and information pamphlets:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 9 – an information table will be available at the Administration Centre, located at 148 Line 7 South from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 10 – an information table will be available at the Oro-Medonte Community Centre, located at 71 Line 4 North & Highway 11 (Guthrie) from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Friday, Oct. 12 – an information table will be available at O’Connor’s Hardware, located at 9136 Highway 12 (Warminster) from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

“I encourage all residents of Oro-Medonte to participate in Fire Prevention Week by attending one of the available information sessions,” said Fire Chief Hugh Murray. “Awareness truly is the first step to being prepared should a fire strike.”
