A little preparation comes in handy as police respond to very few incidents during storm

'All in all, we’re weathering the storm. We get these warnings often in our area, so residents are usually ready for it,' says Barrie police official

The weather predictions seemed to have been right about the snowfall that the region was going to get, but police say the roads have thankfully been uneventful for the most part.

It was said that Barrie would get 10 to 15 centimetres of the wintry white stuff throughout the day Monday and that seems to be what the city is seeing as snow covers the ground the continues to accumulate in most areas of the city.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon said it had been a good day on the roads and he thinks it is because most people were very prepared.

“All in all, we’re weathering the storm. We get these warnings often in our area, so residents are usually ready for it,” said Leon. “Today appears to be a day that most really heeded the warnings as we have not seen many collisions or incidents. We’ve had three calls that went to the collision reporting centre  (so) not too much on the go.”

Leon said there have been issues involving some stranded vehicles, mostly on hills and particularly Fairview Road and Essa Road, which are steep.

“We’ve seen a couple folks there having a hard time getting up that hill, but also anywhere around the city where there may an incline of any kind. Barrie has lots of those, so we remind drivers to be careful when driving,” said Leon.

According to Leon, traffic in the city seemed “significantly less than a regular day during the week,” which he attributed to drivers having had days of advanced warnings about the storm and also that schools are closed in the region.

“We started getting snow before much of other parts of Ontario and this particular storm we have had knowledge of for a few days,” he said. “We hope the drive home from work is as uneventful for everyone and remind them to just go slow.

"Getting home safe is the only thing that matters.”
