Break out the Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts for the second annual Winter Ball.

Life Skills students from across Simcoe County will get dressed for beach weather today at the second annual Winter Ball.

This year's theme is a luau.

The event, held at Bear Creek Secondary School, is a celebration for students of all abilities.

“We are excited to welcome friends from across Simcoe County to our event,” says Laura Bruno, teacher at Bear Creek. “Student and staff volunteers create a very special and memorable experience for our students.”

Life Skills students might not normally attend regular proms or dances and this is a chance for them to have that opportunity.

The Winter Ball features a lunch, dance, photo booth and prizes for participating students.

Last year, students attending the Winter Ball had the star treatment by getting their hair and makeup done at the Bear Creek Beauty Boutique.

More than 150 students and staff are expected to attend from high schools and elementary schools across the area.

Life Skills classes provide intensive programming and support for students in the areas of basic literacy and numeracy, technology integration, communication, self-advocacy, social skills, vocational training and community awareness.

The event takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Bear Creek is located at 100 Red Oak Drive in Barrie.
